  Thallus olive-greenish to olive-grey, greenish orange or pale orange, thin; soredia and isidia absent. Apothecia common and scattered, rounded to somewhat distorted, sessile, constricted at the base, 0.6–1.4 mm wide; disc orange-brown, ±plane; margin prominent, smooth, orange; disc and margin K+ purple; proper exciple of hyaline radiating agglutinated hyphae, the outer layer encrusted with anthraquinone crystals, colourless within. Epihymenium encrusted with anthraquinone crystals or the crystals becoming eroded. Hymenium not inspersed, colourless, 80–120 μm thick; hypothecium pale red-brown. Asci (4–) 6–8-spored, 70–90 × 18–22 μm. Ascospores broadly ellipsoidal, spirally septate and submuriform, with 6–8 primary lens-shaped locules each with 1 or 2 vertical septa, 25–35 × 12–18 μm. Conidia not seen.
CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecia K+ purple; thallus containing ±fragilin (minor), ±parietin (trace); apothecia containing fragilin (major), parietin (minor), ±emodin (trace), ±7-chloroemodin (trace), ±7-chloroemodinal (trace), ±7-chloroparietinic acid (trace), ±7-chloro-teloschistin (trace), ±fragilin bisanthrone (trace), ±physcoin bisanthrone (trace), ±exuviatic acid B (minor).
     
  Very rare on bark in coastal forest in north-eastern Qld. Also in North America, Asia, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia.
